Backhoe Course Brisbane: What RIIMPO319E Covers

The backhoe course Brisbane civil construction and earthmoving crews need — RIIMPO319E Conduct Backhoe/Loader Operations — builds real on-site competency for safe backhoe and loader operation. Training combines in-class theory with practical demonstration and assessment across legislation and WHS responsibilities, hazard identification and risk control, planning and communication, pre-use inspections, load charts and load characteristics, safe operation, transport, reporting procedures, and shutdown and post-operation checks.

This unit applies to operators performing tasks such as lifting, carrying and placing materials, trench excavation, backfilling, and loading trucks in line with workplace procedures and WHS requirements. It’s suited to those working in civil construction, infrastructure and plant operator roles where backhoe loader competency is required on active job sites.

Anyone who holds their backhoe/loader ticket can operate any backhoe/loader with common attachments (buckets, augers, rippers). This unit alone doesn’t cover independent loading/unloading of equipment — that requires RIIHAN308F Load and Unload Plant (or equivalent) as well.

Practical Backhoe Course Training for Civil Construction Worksites in Brisbane

Our backhoe course is delivered face to face with a strong focus on practical, hands-on experience that reflects real job site conditions. Participants develop the ability to operate machinery safely while adapting to different terrain, materials and work tasks commonly encountered in civil construction environments.

You’ll gain experience conducting pre-start inspections, operating the backhoe loader across a range of activities, positioning machinery for safe material movement, and using attachments within manufacturer and workplace limits. Training also includes relocation procedures, basic operator maintenance, and maintaining safe work practices in changing site conditions.

The course is delivered face to face and typically takes 1–3 days to complete, depending on group size and experience, and can be delivered at our Hemmant location or onsite in Brisbane where the correct equipment is available. On successful completion, participants receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIMPO319E issued by RTO 45597.

Sheer Workplace Training is responsible for the quality of this training and assessment, and issues the Statement of Attainment for this unit under RTO 45597.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course; however, participants will need to demonstrate sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to operate successfully and complete this course. There are no prerequisite, entry, work-placement, licensing, certification or pre-course study requirements for this course.

Personal safety clothing must be provided by the student and worn during training. Sheer Workplace Training facility will provide additional safety equipment which must be worn throughout the practical aspect of the training.

Participants must be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of this course.

Physical Requirements

It is important to note that there are physical standards which relate to the level of performance required when undertaking accredited training. There can be no exceptions to these Australian Government requirements that are clearly written into the Training Package.

Therefore, students who are unable to satisfy the physical requirements of the course cannot be deemed competent or issued with a statement of attainment, even if the qualification is a necessary part of their employment conditions.

Course Fees

Pre-Course Study

  • Students can obtain a training handbook which includes pre-training reading via email, post or collection prior to training.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Completing any vocational education course in Australia, it is a requirement for you to obtain and supply a USI. This is obtainable from usi.gov.au — if a USI is not supplied and verified with usi.gov.au a certificate cannot be issued to you.

Training and Assessment

Training will cover:

  • Plan and prepare for backhoe/loader operations
  • Conduct backhoe/loader pre-operational checks
  • Operate backhoe/loader
  • Select, remove and fit attachments
  • Relocate the backhoe/loader
  • Carry out machine operator maintenance
  • Conduct housekeeping activities

Practical Assessment

The simulated assessment environments will reflect the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment. Skills must be demonstrated by the student working individually in an environment that provides realistic, in-depth, industry-validated scenarios and simulations to assess students’ skills and knowledge.
