The excavator operator course Brisbane workers need — RIIMPO320F Conduct Civil Construction Excavator Operations — provides the nationally recognised skills and knowledge required to operate an excavator safely across civil construction and earthmoving environments. This training is designed for workers who need competency in lifting, carrying, and placing materials while maintaining safe work practices in real job site conditions.

Throughout the course, you will learn how to plan and prepare for excavator operations, identify hazards, assess risks, and apply appropriate control measures in line with workplace procedures. Training also includes pre-operational checks, machine operation techniques, load management, and safe shutdown procedures. You will gain experience selecting, fitting, and using attachments such as buckets, augers, and rippers, ensuring you can adapt to different site requirements.

This unit applies to those working in construction, civil infrastructure, and related industries where excavator operation is required as part of daily tasks.

Practical Excavator Operator Training in Brisbane for Real Job Site Conditions

Our excavator operator training is delivered face to face with a strong focus on practical, hands-on learning that reflects real workplace scenarios. Participants are trained to operate machinery safely while managing site conditions, communication requirements, and task-specific demands commonly encountered in civil construction projects.

You will develop the ability to conduct pre-start inspections, operate the excavator across different activities, manage loads within safe limits, and respond to changing site conditions. Training also covers equipment maintenance, relocation procedures, and safe use of attachments to ensure full operational competency.

The course is delivered face to face and typically takes 1 day to complete, depending on group size and experience. Courses can be delivered from one of our locations or on site, providing the correct equipment is available.

On successful completion, participants receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIMPO320F issued by RTO 45597. Anyone who holds their excavator ticket can operate any excavator with common attachments (buckets, augers, rippers) — note this unit alone doesn’t cover independent loading/unloading of equipment; that requires RIIHAN308F Load and Unload Plant (or equivalent) as well.

Sheer Workplace Training is responsible for the quality of this training and assessment, and issues the Statement of Attainment for this unit under RTO 45597.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course; however, participants will need to demonstrate sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to operate successfully and complete this course. There are no prerequisite, entry, work-placement, licensing, certification or pre-course study requirements for this course.

Personal safety clothing must be provided by the student and worn during training. Sheer Workplace Training facility will provide additional safety equipment which must be worn throughout the practical aspect of the training.

Participants must be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of this course.

Physical Requirements

It is important to note that there are physical standards which relate to the level of performance required when undertaking accredited training. There can be no exceptions to these Australian Government requirements that are clearly written into the Training Package.

Therefore, students who are unable to satisfy the physical requirements of the course cannot be deemed competent or issued with a statement of attainment, even if the qualification is a necessary part of their employment conditions.

Course Fees

Pre-Course Study

  • Students can obtain a training handbook which includes pre-training reading via email, post or collection prior to training.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Completing any vocational education course in Australia, it is a requirement for you to obtain and supply a USI. This is obtainable from usi.gov.au — if a USI is not supplied and verified with usi.gov.au a certificate cannot be issued to you.

Training and Assessment

Training will cover:

  • Plan and prepare for excavator operations
  • Conduct excavator pre-operational checks
  • Operate excavator
  • Select, remove and fit attachments
  • Relocate the excavator
  • Carry out machine operator maintenance
  • Conduct housekeeping activities

Practical Assessment

The simulated assessment environments will reflect the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment. Skills must be demonstrated by the student working individually in an environment that provides realistic, in-depth, industry-validated scenarios and simulations to assess students’ skills and knowledge.
