ABOUT THIS COURSE:

Boom lift training

This boom over 11m training specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a boom-type Elevating Work Platform (EWP) where the length of the boom is 11 metres or more.

Boom-type elevating work platform means a telescoping device, hinged device, or articulated device, or any combination of these, used to support a platform on which personnel, equipment and materials may be elevated.

A person performing this work is required to hold a boom-type elevating work platform HRWL.

Students are required to operate elevating work platform and shut down and secure an elevating work platform.

Course delivery: face to face delivery

Course Duration: 2 – 3 days depending on group size and experience

Applying for your licence

Once you have completed your face-to-face training and upon successful completion of assessment, you will need to apply for High Risk Work (HRW) Licence through  WorkSafe Qld. High risk licences need to be renewed every 5 years (how to renew your licence). You will not be able to operate a boom lift over 11 metres without an HRW Licence.

Sheer Workplace Training is responsible for the quality of the training and assessment and will be issuing the statement of attainment through RTO number 45597 for this unit. Boom lift over 11m training is a government recognised qualification course code TLILIC0005 Licence to operate a boom type elevated work platform over 11m or more.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course; however, participants will need to demonstrate sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete this course. There are no prerequisite, entry, work-placement, licensing or certification for this course.

Personal safety clothing must be provided by the student and worn during training. Sheer Workplace Training will provide additional safety equipment which must be worn throughout the practical aspect of the training.

Students must be over 18 years of age at the commencement of course this course and provide suitable identification.

Physical Requirements

It is important to note that there are physical standards which relate to the level of performance required when undertaking accredited training. The Australian Government requirements are written into the training. There are no exceptions to these requirements.

Therefore, a student who is unable to satisfy the physical requirements of the course cannot be deemed as competent and cannot be issued with a statement of attainment.

The boom over 11m training is very practical/physical and requires a certain level of fitness. People participating in the course should feel comfortable and be able to lift approximately 10 kilos of dead weight.

Pre course study:

There is approximately 6 hours of pre course reading. Students can obtain a training handbook which includes pre training reading via email, post or collection prior to training.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Completing any vocational education course in Australia, it is a requirement for you to obtain and supply a USI. This is obtainable from usi.gov.au if a USI is not supplied and verified with usi.gov.au a certificate cannot be issued to you.

Funding

You may be eligible for funding such as Jetco and BERT. Please ask for more information about eligibility upon enrolment.

Course fees

Course fees are paid directly to Sheer Workplace Training. This course is usually arranged by the employer of a workgroup in which case the employer can be invoiced for the training. Alternatively, candidates can pay course fees directly to Sheer Workplace Training on or before the day of training.

We will communicate with you about your course fees before your enrolment.

Training will cover
  • Plan work – Identify hazards and implement appropriate control measures

  • Conduct routine checks – Check logbook, EWP structural integrity, safety and communication equipment

  • Set up – Check ground suitability, apply appropriate hazard prevention/control measures

  • Operate EWP – Use relevant plant movements, use best mobile practice and respond to unplanned/unsafe situations, use of riggers and stabilisers

  • Shut down – Correctly stow EWP and safety equipment, conduct routine post-operational checks

ASSESSMENT NOTIFICATION

The boom lift training and assessment process is similar in every Australian state and territory. All components of the assessment are mandatory and supplied by Safe Work Australia.

Under Workplace Health and Safety Legislation, Assessors are required to submit details of all upcoming assessments to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland’s head office in advance. Sheer Workplace Training must provide at least 3 business days notice before conducting any boom lift assessments.

Inspectors from Workplace Health and Safety Queensland in Brisbane have the authority to conduct an unannounced audit of our Assessors, the trainee, the boom lift and the training facility at any time.

Assessment is conducted over one day and is made up of theory, calculations and practical elements.

Process
  • You need to achieve a successful outcome in the theory and calculations component before you can proceed to the practical assessment

  • Your practical assessment will be conducted in English – no interpreters

Certification

On successful completion of the boom over 11m theory and practical assessment, students will receive:​

  • a Statement of Attainment for Licence to operate a boom type WP (boom length 11m or more) nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework

  • an Assessment Summary Form (AS1) for Licence to operate a boom type WP (boom length 11m or more)

  • Participants need to apply for a High Risk Work Licence at WorkSafe QLD  within 60 days of completing the over 11m boom lift training. See our blog for information on how to renew your high risk licence (renew your high risk licence)
