Are you at a crossroads in your construction industry career or seeking to find new opportunities without the need for a years-long investment in your education? If so, pursuing an EWPA yellow card certification could be the perfect next step.

Yellow card training programs give you the skills and certification needed to operate different types of elevating work platforms safely. This can make you a more appealing candidate for work in various industries while also allowing for more competitive salaries.

Curious about training courses and wondering about the next steps? Here are our top tips for obtaining your yellow card.

What Does a Yellow Card Certification Entail

Training in the safe operation of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (EWPs), such as scissor lifts and vertical lifts, requires commitment and dedication. Attendees to industry training programs will be expected to learn about:

  • The different types of EWPAs
  • Hazard identification
  • Associated Workplace Health & Safety Regulations and proper compliance
  • What is required to operate EWPA equipment
  • How to operate EWPA equipment, including boom type EWPS with boom lengths under 11 metres
  • Emergency procedures
  • License expiry dates and more.

Training involves both theory and practical elements and there is an assessment of skills learned at the close of training. You must pass this assessment to secure your yellow card.

Please note that yellow card training is not classed as a high-risk work activity. While some workplaces may request employees hold a high-risk certification, legally EWPs under 11 metres do not require one.

Our Top Tips For Securing Your Yellow Card

  1. Choose A Trustworthy & Reliable Course Provider

You should be sure that your chosen course provider is a properly registered training organisation (RTO). This is essential when obtaining your yellow card certification as only an RTO is able to give you legitimate yellow card certification.

Beware of providers offering an online-only course, as this is not permitted for yellow card training.

1. Make The Most Of Your Training Experience

This is a one-day course and you will need to demonstrate that you have understood the course material by completing an assessment.

To ensure you depart training with the necessary skills and knowledge, we encourage you to ask questions, attend your training on time and actively participate in practical components.

2. Preparing For The Exam

Your assessment at the end of your day’s training is essential to securing your yellow card. Before beginning your assessment, be sure to speak with your trainer to clarify anything you remain unsure of.

Should fail either the theory or practical component of the exam you will need to resit these or possibly re-do the training.

3. Keep Calm

Yellow Card training courses are not intended to be overly difficult, course material is designed to be easily understood. The goal of this course is to ensure the safety of you and your colleagues in the workplace while EWPs are being operated.

As trainers, we want you to succeed and will do whatever we can to support you in this. It is important to remain calm during your assessment as this will help us and you to pass with flying colours.

4. Take It Further

Don’t confine your learning to a one-day course. Investing in continued learning while on the job such as continued practice with those more experienced, can help you gain additional confidence.

You may even like to pursue further certifications in operating EWPs, working at heights, forklift licensing and more.
