Working in labour or construction often involves using an elevated work platform (EWP), requiring specific skills and knowledge for operation. Elevate your career and salary prospects by mastering EWP operations through nationally recognised training. Discover how an EWP training course can not only boost your professional growth but also ensure a safer and more satisfying work environment, setting you apart in the industry.

What is EWP Training and Certification?

EWP courses cover how to safely operate a boom-type elevating work platform and how to work safely at heights while using one.

Benefits of EWP Training and Certification

There are so many great benefits to pursuing elevated work platform training and certification including but not limited to:

Employment

Knowing how to perform necessary machinery checks and safely operate a boom lift, scissor lift, and vertical lift machinery improves your employability. Employers often seek to employ those with a variety of skills that give them a more flexible and versatile team.

Nationally recognised, this qualification is able to travel with you no matter where you go in Australia, making it easier to find work wherever you settle.

Safety

To operate in line with Workplace Health and Safety regulations, EWP operators must hold a qualification in this area. Not only does this ensure compliance but it also ensures you and your colleagues remain safe and can return home as planned at the end of each workday.

Increased Salary

The more qualifications you hold, the more you have to offer an employer and the more opportunities you will have access to. As a result, your salary is likely to be higher.

Careers That Benefit From This Certification

Holding qualifications in how to operate an EWP can help you advance in or attain employment in the following industries:

  • Civil construction
  • Construction
  • Coal and metalliferous mining
  • Manufacturing industries
  • Transport and Logistics
  • Trades
  • Rescue officers and more.

Types of EWP Training and Certification

There are two main EWP courses to consider when seeking to obtain one of these high-risk work licenses. These are:

1. RIIHAN301E Operate Elevating Work Platform Yellow Card

This covers how to operate scissor lifts, vertical lifts, trailer-mounted lifts and boom types under 11 metres safely and efficiently.

2. EWP Ticket Over 11 Metres

This boom over 11m training gives attendees the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a boom-type Elevating Work Platform (EWP) where the length of the boom is 11 metres or more.

You do not need to have completed the first course in order to attend the second. It is worthwhile considering the latter for optimal versatility in your workplace and greater future opportunities.

How to Get EWP Training and Certification

To achieve certification in operating an EWP you will need to find and book into a training course delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Depending on the type of course you choose, training will take between 1 to 3 days to complete.

While both of the above courses offered at Sheer Workplace Training do not have any formal entry requirements, you may need to complete some pre-course reading.

Additionally, you must:

  • Demonstrate sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills
  • Wear appropriate personal safety clothing during attendance
  • Meet the minimum physical standards necessary to perform at the required level during training

Course Outline

While course content varies a little between the two available courses, you can expect to cover the following:EWP Training

  • Introduction
  • Relevant Australian Standards, Legislation and Regulations
  • OH&S policy
  • Codes of Practice
  • Work requirements, safety information and procedures
  • Site hazards
  • Conduct machine pre-operational checks
  • Operation vertical lifts, scissor lifts of all sizes and boom lifts under 11 metres
  • Complete an assessment both written and practical
  • Statement of attainments issued

Once you pass your assessments, a statement of attainment is issued, and you are considered qualified.

For EWP certification under 11 metres, a competency card is issued and this is what you will need to show your employer.

For EWP certification over 11 metres, you submit this statement of attainment to WorkSafe QLD who will then issue you with your High-Risk Work (HRW) Licence.
